Topic: Is a Market a Market a Market? Analysis
This week, we have been unpacking the ways that “the market” is a term that is used as if it is one thing but that markets in reality have very wide-ranging impacts. We also discussed the ways that various forms of capital – industrial, merchant, usury, speculative, and dispossession – result in different uses of resources and distributions of wealth, poverty, and access. For this assignment, it is your job to identify two examples of markets that produce different results – in terms of a set of relationships, distribution of assets, creation of new wealth, etc, that allow us to see how markets differ, both in structure and in their impacts. These can be contemporary or historical, based on a current event/news story or some other source. You should:
Describe the two examples in enough detail that your classmates can understand it;
Identify the kinds of capital that are being mobilized in the examples;
Explore the implications of this for distributions of wealth and poverty.
Your write-up should be no more than about 750 words, but you can include links to articles if that is helpful.
Delivering a high-quality product at a reasonable price is not enough anymore.
